Clifton Family Portraits

I grew up in a household with 3 boys, so when Hayley visited our studio to talk about her upcoming portrait shoot, I  knew we were going to have a fun day !

Over the last few weeks the weather hasn’t been the best, and so on the day, we decided that we would start off inside the house before braving the cold and the wind for some pictures in the family’s wonderful garden. Luckily there was plenty of scope inside the house with nice soft light, and interesting backgrounds to use.
Hugo, Jasper and Charlie were a delight to work with, and getting good pictures was just a matter of engaging each of them in conversation, be it school and sport or animal noises, it really doesn’t matter, I just have to work through a range of topics until we get something that works, and you will never know what that is going to be especially with the younger kids. Sometimes singing Happy Birthday works, other times it may be a series of head butts! ( soft gentle ones!) Either way, what I am really looking for is interaction one on one, which sometimes needs to be worked for! Often during this time, the parents want to help me by trying to make their children, smile, or behave, or cooperate, or … while it can be agonizing to watch me struggle with your children and to see them not cooperating, I always ask my parents to refrain from helping and to just let me struggle on. The reason for that is that when I finally break through, and I will break through, the reactions, expressions and smiles will be coming back to me ( and my camera )

I always try to do some individual pictures first so that I have a little bit of one on one time with everybody, so that when we get to the family group, the ice has been broken, and I have a little bit of an idea of what makes each individual tick.

I had worked with Bede before, but it was really nice to see him outside of a commercial environment just having fun with this family.

This is a family that responded really well to piling in together, and it was great to be able to capture those close, real moments that show exactly what it means to be part of this family.
